No Pants Subway Ride Hits World

The No Pants Subway Ride, organized by Charlie Todd and the group Improv Everywhere, went off without a hitch this past Sunday and proved to be one of their best yet. The No Pants Subway Ride, which has been growing in ridiculously large numbers since its first occurrence in 2002, featured over 4,000 riders in subway cars all over the city. The No Pants Subway Ride occurred in 60 cities in over 25 countries around the world.

The event is quite simple, people from around the world step onto their local metro, subway, train, whatever, and take their pants off. The most interesting part is that, right after, they act as if nothing at all is up. The Underwear Expert speaks with event creator and planner Charlie Todd about the event:

The Underwear Expert: How did the idea of your first No Pants Subway Ride come about?
Charlie Todd: I was sitting on a bus heading upstate to visit a friend and it occurred to me how funny it would be if people entered a form of public transportation at separate stops wearing (or not wearing) the same thing. A few months later I gave it a shot during the coldest week of the year, which was the funniest time to do it, in my opinion.
UE: Have there been any significant changes since the event’s inception?
Charlie Todd: Well the biggest change is size. It’s gone from seven to 4,000. We do our best to keep it authentic and to have each car start out with one person at the first stop and then one person at the second stop.
UE: And what do you think it is about running around in underwear that people find so enticing?
Charlie Todd: It’s just fun to do something out-of-the-ordinary. I think many participants are not performers and would normally never do anything to draw attention to themselves in public. So it’s a fun opportunity to do something a little different. It’s fun to be a part of a big team of people all on the same silly page.
