In this Instagram video, we see gogreen2nd 13 weeks out of surgery and working his way back up to his one rep max for squats. He manages to lift 320 lbs., which is obviously still a lot. But what is the benefit of lifting so much weight if you can only manage a single rep? Knowing your one max rep is literally like knowing your true strength. Not only that, but it allows you to truly gauge how you are pushing yourself during a typical gym session.

There are several ways to calculate your one rep max online, even some calculators that do it for you based on your performance with other weight levels. Knowing your one max rep is typically recommended for people starting a strength training routine. And for people well into their strength training, an increased one rep max shows how much progress has been made. Of course, you don’t jump in trying to hit your one max rep. Start out with 3-4 sets to warm up.
