Trend Report: Milan Fashion Week Underwear Round-Up

Something always happens during fashion month. In addition to hundreds of models filing up and down countless runways in Paris, Milan, London and New York, something notable – and usually pretty funny – happens. One season it was a bench full of editors collapsing at Balenciaga, and this season at Milan fashion week: a streaker at the end of the Dolce & Gabbana show.

It’s quite possible that he was just after the waffle knit underwear and accompanying striped tank tops Stefano Gabbana and Domencio Dolce had just sent down the runway, or even the printed swim shorts that are sure to look absolutely divine on the beaches next year. We’ll never know exactly what the streaker was after as he was fairly quickly escorted off of the premises, but it’s safe to say he was looking for some sort of underwear “coverage.”

Stefano and Domencio weren’t the only Milanese designers thinking of underwear for the season, and who can blame them with the ever increasing heat of the summer. Philipp Plein sent down his own fairly comprehensive line-up.  While some of the underwear only meekly peeked above the waistbands of sweatpants and bad-boy denim jeans, other pieces stood on their own, with phrases like “Toy Boy” emblazoned across. It was a full offering with boxer shorts, boxer briefs and briefs in grey, black and white all a part of the mix.

Dean and Dan, the twins over at Dsquared2 were on one accord with Plein for the need for briefs at Milan fashion week this year; they opened the show with them. Amidst the wreckage of a supposed plane crash – if you thought Lord of the Flies we’re the same person – models emerged wearing the tightest and whitest whitey-tighties they could manage while others wore printed trunks, accessorized with long braided necklaces and leis.

And then of course there was Donatella. Inspired by athletes, Donatella sent her models down the Versace runway decked out in what can only be described as high rise speedos, sweatshirts and multi-colored sports tape. It’s a beach look for the books, no doubt.
