Saudi Youth: Underwear “Gangnam Style”

Whether or not you’ve seen the viral music video by Korean pop singer PSY (which you must have considering it’s now the second most-watched video on YouTube), you’ve got to watch the parody by Saudi Arabian youth wearing their underwear “Gangnam Style!”

The original song and video, “Gangnam Style” by PSY, has reached over 700 million views, and is just behind Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video as the second most-watched YouTube video of all time. The song, which describes the trendy and cool lifestyle in a Seoul, South Korea neighborhood became viral almost immediately after its release in July.

Some lyrics as translated by KPOP lyrics:

I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy

In the Saudi underwear “Gangnam Style” video, a parody of the PSY song uploaded earlier this month, 5 Saudi Arabian youth dance to the same recording of the song, except they do all the dancing in their underwear! Even though traditional Saudi Arabian undergarments are even more boring than Mormon Secret Sacred Underwear, the video still made a huge cultural impact. In the Saudi underwear “Gangnam Style,” the dancers in the video wore their underwear to show how much they dislike the conventional aspects of their culture, and that they can’t be like the “guy” described in PSY’s lyrics (and perhaps their boring underwear as well!).

In addition to their posting of the Saudi underwear “Gangnam Style” video,  the same group campaigned for a special day to wear their underwear in public! This further push angered many people of their country however, and caused a law to be put in place to now prohibit such behavior.
