“Superman has now ditched the red underwear,” Phillip Boutte, Man of Steel Costume Illustrator, recently said in an interview at Comic Con. This isn’t exactly news (Superman fans went crazy last year after spotting Superman Henry Cavill sans the red briefs), but why the film’s creative crew ultimately decided why to make the change is. The reason, well, it’s an Earth thing.
“We went back and forth with trying to figure out if he should have them or if he shouldn’t. And, The biggest factor was, is that in this world..Superman is an alien, he comes from a different planet. So we thought that the underwear kind of made him feel like he’s from here.” See, it’s an Earth thing. Don’t be too worried, though, Boutte says the loss of the iconic red underwear will only make the superhero “a little bit alien” and promises he will still be recognizable “as what you know him to be.”
So there you have it. In the upcoming Man of Steel, Superman loses his red skivvies because he’s alien, and not because the washing machine ate them. What are your thoughts? Does Superman losing his red underwear mean he also loses his sex appeal?
Man of Steel also stars Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Julia Ormand, Harry Lennix, Christopher Meloni, and Russell Crowe. It opens on June 14, 2013.
