We’re about half way through the summer in NYC which means you’ve been burnt, you’ve peeled, you’ve sweat, etc. Whatever you’ve been up to this summer, one thing is true: your skin has taken a beating. And, unless you’ve been exfoliating regularly, you’re carrying around all that sweat, dirt and sunscreen in layers upon layers of dead, nasty skin. Don’t fret, though, good sirs – The Underwear Expert is here to bestow upon you three off-the-beaten-path exfoliating tips to get your skin back to tip-top shape so you can finish out the summer with a bang. And, really, your underwear will look so much better on a body that’s smooth and moisturized as opposed to dry and flaky. Right? Right.
Tip 1: Use a 100% Viscose Asian Exfoliating Washcloth
Asian men and women have used viscose washcloths and rags for years to achieve soft and vibrant skin. The 100% viscose composition makes for one of the most intense exfoliating experiences you’ll ever have (much more than loofas and natural sea sponges.) The rags are typically long and thin enabling you to get those hard to reach places like your lower back and feet, and even come in different colors differentiating between different levels of harshness. Your skin might be a little red after, especially if you have sensitive skin, but it won’t last long.We even recommend using these exfoliating miracles without soap to achieve the maximum effect. You’ll be amazed at how much skin comes off after a few minutes with one of these guys (like, you’ll definitely have to rinse the tub out when you’re done) but don’t worry, your skin will thank you and your underwear will look 10x better on.
Take 2: Break out the Baking Soda
Sodium bicarbonate, aka Baking Soda, has tons of qualities that make it a great beauty, health and skin-care product. For skin, it makes for an excellent exfoliator that’s both cheap and effective: when mixed with water, baking soda creates a thick paste that you can rub all of your body (and even your face) to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. There are multiple recipes online that tailor baking soda to your needs, too–you can mix it with lemon juice, honey, oats, essential oils and plant extracts. For optimum exfoliating, we recommend soaking in a warm bath or shower to loosen dead skin cells and then applying the baking soda scrub to your skin using strong, circular hand motions. Rinse off, pat dry and moisturize to finish. Result: soft, radiant skin that costs you like.. pennies.
Tip 3: Take a Swim in the Ocean
Yep, it’s a simple as that. Emerging your self in salt water is a quick and easy way to sluff off dead skin cells. Salt helps draw out toxins, microscopic dirt and pollutants that infiltrate your skin over time and even stimulates skin cells. Salt water helps restore mineral balance of the skin as well which helps maintain proper moisture. Simply hop in the ocean (or a salt water bath or pool), rub yourself like you do when you’re bathing, and bam–soft, healthy and moisturized skin.
