This Saturday, April 28th, hundreds of boxer- and briefs-wearing runners will be stampeding through Buffalo, New York. The reason: the first ever Buffalo Undy 5000, a 5K Run/Walk which is intended both to raise money for and increase awareness of colon cancer.
“We know Buffalo is going to be a great first-year city for the Undy 5000,” said Todd Setter, National Undy 5000 Event Director. “We really wanted to bring the race to a part of the country we had not yet reached, and we hope we can spread the word about preventing and treating colon cancer here in upstate New York!”
The Buffalo Undy 5000 will feature the Colon Cancer Alliance’s (CCA) Inflatable Colon, which is a giant, walk-through colon that shows the various stages of colon cancer, including descriptions about Crohn’s disease and Colitis. Instead of event T-shirts, participants will receive Undy 5000-branded briefs. The event is hosted by the CCA, and local sponsors include Gastroenterology Associates, LLP, the Endoscopy Center of Western New York, Buffalo Spree, Digestive Health Physicians, Star 102.5, Buffalo Medical Group, Upstate Steel, and Rupp, Baase, Pfalzgraf, Cunningham and Coppola LLC.
Planning Committee Chairperson Tess Fraser was instrumental in bringing the Undy Run to Buffalo, after losing her mother to colon cancer. “Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of all was discovering that colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, and that early screening can help prevent over 80 percent of all cases,” Fraser said. “I was overcome with an urgency to help raise awareness about colon cancer and the importance of early screening.”
Running in only your underwear is certainly a quick way to catch someone’s attention. And the more attention, the better: colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society.
Online registration for this good cause, good exercise and good excuse to show off your skivvies will close on Wednesday, April 25th at 8 PM, so do a warm up lap and run over to a computer to register online at www.undy5000.org if you’re in the Buffalo area. In person registration will only take place on the day of the event.
