WWD Forecasts Spring 14’s Biggest Mens Underwear Trend

Fashion publication WWD has forecasted the biggest men’s underwear trend for the Spring 2014 season; they’ve appropriately named it the “Action Figure.” “The boxer brief in technical fabrics with pops of bright colors, aerodynamic construction and mesh-panel inserts” will be the leading style for the season.

Surprised that the biggest forecasted men’s underwear trend for the first months of 2014 is a a boxer brief? Don’t be. Just last year WWD said “the number-one-selling silhouette continues to be the boxer brief, which commands more than a 40 percent share of the men’s underwear business in the U.S.” As underwear brands continually embrace smaller and more revealing silhouettes, including jockstraps, the boxer brief still apparently reigns supreme.

The reason for the continued popularity of the boxer brief is innovation in fabric and construction, which when paired with the protective cut of the style, makes for an unparalleled athletic underwear experience. A continued push to introduce stylish designs and colors into men’s wardrobes could also be at play. Also maintaining the popularity of the athletic are inclusions in popular underwear collections from heavyweight brands like Calvin Klein and Emporio Armani as well as celebrity collections from the likes of David Beckham and Mario Lopez.

Model Manuel Vega models upcoming “Action Figure” boxer briefs from Calvin Klein, Jockey, Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, Bread & Boxers, Tommy Hilfiger, 2xist, Hugo Boss, DKNY and Fruit of the Loom below. Are you a fan of next spring’s men’s underwear trend, or would you have thought it would have been a smaller cut like a trunk, brief or jockstrap? Let us know on Twitter here.
