The signs of our continental spring thaw are here, and that means a summer of outdoor activity and, maybe more importantly, less clothing awaits. If you’re planning a longer excursion that includes camping during the more temperate months, you probably know that packing light will be key to your success. Fittingly, we recently received this email from a fan of The Underwear Expert:
Patrick, from Santa Cruz, California – Hi there, Underwear Expert. I’m an outdoor enthusiast, and I’m big into camping, essentially being away from civilization for several days. I need something that works for multiple purposes, something I can wash quickly by hand and that dries even faster. Any suggestions.
The Underwear Expert – Great question, Patrick, and we definitely have some options for you. You don’t want to trek into the woods or up into the mountains carrying more than necessary, and so having a versatile pair of underwear or swim shorts is essential to survival. Here are some brands and styles that might work for you:
Wood Biker Brief Liquid Camo – These briefs are perfect for mountain biking and hiking. They have a 6-inch leg and an ultrasoft Lenzing Tencel fabric that wicks sweat away from your body as well as microbial and thermocontrol properties. These briefs are meant to perform all day, and you’ll blend in with your surroundings if you’re cooking dinner over the campfire in your skivvies.
PUMP! Spring Fling Jogger – A contrast in color and style from our last suggestion, this bright, short trunk is perfect for zipping up a mountain pass or a little bit of rock climbing. These trunks have micromesh pockets, a wide blue elastic waistband, and yellow leg elastic to keep you cool and secure. At the end of a long day, no one will care if you decide to take a dip in this pair. They can air-day while you unpack.
Radical Energy, The Fred Swim Short – These swim shorts work well in a canoe or kayak, or even for a lighter hike. They’re 100% polyester, with mesh lining, pockets on both sides, and a zipper fly. If you get to campsite early, these are perfect for lying out of the beach before a pre-supper swim, and they’re stylish enough to slip into town for rations if you’ve run low.
