This was made easier by positioning himself on the machine in such a way that his pelvis is pushed against the pads. This also prevents him from using his hips and stealing the benefits of this exercise from his back.
Working your posterior muscles is something too many people forget about in their gym routines. It is easy to just work the vanity muscles, but a strong back can help you keep the proper form during a wide variety of exercises. We always say that the correct form is crucial. Executing any exercise correctly is infinitely more productive than lifting more incorrectly.
