I “Like” and follow Improv Everywhere on Facebook. Back in December 2013 when I saw the page post the event No Pants Subway Ride 2014, which was Sunday, January 12th, I put the event into my phone calendar with two alarms: the first one two days out, and the second one two hours out. I wasn’t sure I would partake, but I wanted to give myself the option should I be so inclined that day.
The first reminder came and I gave it very little thought; it would be a day-of decision. Sunday morning January 12th came, and I was making crepes with someone dear to me, again giving little thought to No Pants Subway Ride 2014. When the two-hour-out alarm went off for the 3pm meet-up I ignored it and returned my attention to ma cherie and our crepes. We went on to enjoy a delightful afternoon, immersed in each other’s company.
It was around 4pm when we said goodbye, I entered the subway at Grand Central wondering if I might see anyone rocking their jocks. Sure enough, as soon as I entered the Southbound 4 train there was a neatly groomed guy sporting his briefs. I immediately took a picture envying his freedom and the experience he was having—imagine riding the New York subway in just your underwear. Then I got off at Union Square and the exodus from the cars revealed that about a quarter of the people leaving the 4 were sharing in the same exact freedom: pantsless men, women, mothers with their children, and seniors. All walks of life and just as wide a variety of underwear types were represented. What a liberating and cool experience they were part of. I considered taking off my pants and joining them, but felt it was a wannabe move at this point. I would just have to wait until the No Pants Subway Ride 2015.
As soon as I was above ground I texted ma cherie a picture of the first guy I had seen on the 4 train and wrote “this is us next year”. Next year I will heed the reminder.
