AussieBum Retro Swim: A Step Back, but in the Right Direction

In the past couple of years, pop culture has been hit with a retro bug. You can practically trace the movement back to Christina Aguilera’s “Back To Basics” album, but Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Janelle Monae, and Bruno Mars have released commercial records with a vintage feel. The success of movies like “The Artist” and “The Great Gatsby” has also solidified the notion that America loves retro.

The love for vintage has always held its own worldwide, spilling into the fashion world on red carpets and Paris runways. The Underwear Expert has even gotten on board with its own Gatsby inspired photo shoot. Vintage has also been on the mind of Australian-based aussieBum in the aussieBum Retro swimwear range.

Though aussieBum Retro swimwear was released in the summer of 2006, three new designs have been added for this range in the past week: Flower Power, Yeah Baby!, and Comic Strip. The three new designs are featured in a promotional video released by aussieBum urging people to “Get back to the beach” and to “Get back to retro.” The update to the range still features the high rise waistline and vintage, hipster/brief cut of AussieBum Retro. Retailing at $50 a pop, the new swimwear  retains the quick drying properties of older styles and is made of 86% polyester and 14% elastane.

Compared to other styles in the Retro range (Summernight, Nirvana, Orient, and Wave) Flower Power, Yeah Baby!, and Comic Strip are heavily printed and less simplistic. Flower Power and Yeah Baby! take the “Get back to the beach” slogan literally, both seemingly inspired by Hawaiian floral prints. Comic Strip seems to have caught the superhero fever but stays true to its retro feel with its vintage comic book layout.

The AussieBum Retro range is available in XS-XXL.
