Ask the Expert: “Muffin Top” Blues

by

Tom from Louisiana: How do I get rid of my muffin top? I hate the way the waistband of my underwear squeezes my body, making it look like I’m all bulge-y. (Is that a word?) I have a pretty decent body, but I’m a little soft in the center..My girlfriend even makes fun of my spare tire. I wear boxer briefs because I need the support but fear they are what is causing the problem. Help!

Expert: Never fear, Tom, we’ll give you the skinny on this waistband woe of yours, but first, let’s explain what a “muffin top” is to the other guys out there who may have never heard that terminology. Muffin top is a slang term used to describe the bulge around the belly and hips that falls over the waistband of one’s underwear as a result of the waistband being too tight.

First, check if the size of your underwear is correct. If your underwear isn’t comfortable, you’ve got a problem. You even said your waistband squeezes your body. Underwear should never “squeeze,” my friend. The purpose of elastic is to “gently hug” your body–without squeezing!

Next, make sure the rise of your boxer brief isn’t too low. If you’re a taller guy, “low-rise” ends up sitting exactly where you don’t want it to (directly under your stomach). Stick with a traditional rise (not high, not low) like the Polo Ralph Lauren Stretch Cotton Boxer Brief, and you’ll be A-OK.

The other issue may lie with the elastic itself. Some elastic is just too rigid, and therefore too tight which means it’ll squeeze no matter what. Fortunately, Tom,  it won’t be too much of a stretch to find a better waistband for you. A few styles from Andrew Christian feature the brand’s famous Anti-Muffin Top waistband, so-called because the elastic is engineered not to dig in. We especially like the Andrew Christian Tighty Whitie Punked Boxer. The thin waistband found on all styles in the Calvin Klein Underwear X Collection lies flat against your skin, too, and is the finest example we’ve seen of a “dig-proof” waistband. And if none of these things work, you can just give up and go commando!
